Fifty Shades Readalikes

There’s no escaping E.L. James’ fan-fiction-to-self-published-bestselling series Fifty Shades. The cat-and-mouse game between innocent, clumsy Ana and billionaire philanthropist Christian Grey has captured the world’s attention and whether you love it or hate it, it looks like it’s here to stay. The movie, based on the first book in the series, will be released on Friday, February 13, 2015. Have you already read the Fifty Shades trilogy and want to read something similar while waiting for the movie? Then below are a few titles that might be of interest. Would you rather listen than read? The Fifty Shades trilogy is also available as a downloadable audiobook from OneClick Digital!

We Recommend…Linnea Sinclair

Games-of-CommandLinnea Sinclair
Available Formats: Paperback | eBook

Do you like Science Fiction with a lot of action and a little romance? Then you’ll enjoy award winning novelist Linnea Sinclair. Her fast paced novels feature strong, independent women that find themselves in serious, often life threatening, situations. In one of my favorites, An Accidental Goddess, the protagonist is thrown more than 300 years into the future and discovers that she’s been turned into a goddess!

Ms. Sinclair has several stand alone novels as well as one series, Dock Five. Gabriel’s Ghost is the first book in the Dock Five series. The Down Home Zombie Blues was optioned for a movie in 2010 but has not yet been released.

Sookie Stackhouse Readalikes

A few weeks ago, Charlaine Harris announced that the 13th book in the Sookie Stackhouse series will be the last. The good news for fans is that True Blood is still around and the twelfth book, Deadlocked, was just released in May. The bad news is that we have to try to find another series filled with humor, romance, mystery, and lots of mythical creatures.

The Kitty Norville series by Carrie Vaughn — While Sookie is human with  special gifts, Kitty is a werewolf at the bottom of her pack’s heirarchy. When Kitty accidentally launches a late-night advice show for the supernaturally disadvantaged, she becomes the target of a werewolf hunter and several homicidal undead. Start with Kitty and the Midnight Hour.

The Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger — Instead of Louisiana where vampires are out of the coffin, travel back in time to Victorian London where vampires, werewolves, and many other paranormal creatures live among the mere mortals. Alexia Tarabotti, our heroine, has her own special set of issues…she has no soul; her father is both Italian and dead; and a vampire rudely attacks her. Then a rude werewolf is sent to investigate. It’s paranormal romance meets steampunk and it’s a lot of fun! Start with Soulless.

The Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost — Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield pursues the undead with a vengeance in the hope that one of her prey will be the father who ruined her mother’s life, but her plans go awry when she is captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter. Start with Halfway to the Grave.

The Last Werewolf by Glen Duncan — The diary of a two-hundred-year-old werewolf. Unlike the werewolves in many paranormal novels, this one is more wolf than man. If you like to mix in the occasional horror novel with your paranormal romances and mysteries, this is a good one! (And if you enjoy this one, look for Talulla Rising later this summer.)

To Be Sung Underwater by Tom McNeal

Vicki loved this sensitive yet powerful story about the consequences of the choices we make in life and love. As a mother, wife, and film editor in California, Judith Whitman’s life starts falling apart little by little and she retreats into memories of her first love, Willy Blunt. After hiring a private detective to locate Willy, Judith’s life forever changes. McNeal’s novel is a beautiful, captivating, and heart wrenching look at regret and longing. Vicki highly recommends it so if it sounds like something you’d like to read, check it out today!

Looking for more novels that involve the “love road” not taken? Try One Day by David Nicholls or The Last Time They Met by Anita Shreve.
