A few weeks ago, Charlaine Harris announced that the 13th book in the Sookie Stackhouse series will be the last. The good news for fans is that True Blood is still around and the twelfth book, Deadlocked, was just released in May. The bad news is that we have to try to find another series filled with humor, romance, mystery, and lots of mythical creatures.
The Kitty Norville series by Carrie Vaughn — While Sookie is human with special gifts, Kitty is a werewolf at the bottom of her pack’s heirarchy. When Kitty accidentally launches a late-night advice show for the supernaturally disadvantaged, she becomes the target of a werewolf hunter and several homicidal undead. Start with Kitty and the Midnight Hour.
The Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger — Instead of Louisiana where vampires are out of the coffin, travel back in time to Victorian London where vampires, werewolves, and many other paranormal creatures live among the mere mortals. Alexia Tarabotti, our heroine, has her own special set of issues…she has no soul; her father is both Italian and dead; and a vampire rudely attacks her. Then a rude werewolf is sent to investigate. It’s paranormal romance meets steampunk and it’s a lot of fun! Start with Soulless.
The Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost — Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield pursues the undead with a vengeance in the hope that one of her prey will be the father who ruined her mother’s life, but her plans go awry when she is captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter. Start with Halfway to the Grave.
The Last Werewolf by Glen Duncan — The diary of a two-hundred-year-old werewolf. Unlike the werewolves in many paranormal novels, this one is more wolf than man. If you like to mix in the occasional horror novel with your paranormal romances and mysteries, this is a good one! (And if you enjoy this one, look for Talulla Rising later this summer.)
