The Broken Shore by Peter Temple takes place in the southernmost area of Australia, where the weather tends to be rainy and cold most of the year. Joe Cashin is a homicide detective who has been sent to a small town police department near where he grew up. After a local older man is murdered, 3 young aboriginal boys are fingered for it, and then another local cop has them shot. Racial tensions are high, and Joe is convinced they weren’t guilty, and he won’t let it go, even though his instructions are to leave it alone. As the bodies start to pile up, Joe follows the leads and discovers the actual killers, along with uncovering very unpleasant activities from the past. This is a fascinating crime novel from an excellent Australian writer that has been made into a mini-series in Australia.
