The Book of Lost Fragrances by M.J. Rose is a beautifully written novel of suspense. Reincarnation, Tibet, China, Napoleon, Paris, Egypt, and New York all play a part in this story as we follow two star-crossed lovers from ancient Egypt to the present day.
As a centuries old French perfumery — now owned by siblings Robbie & Jac L’Etoile — heads toward bankruptcy, pottery shards are discovered that their ancestor recovered from a tomb in Egypt while traveling with Napoleon. The hieroglyphics on them hint at a perfume that can awaken the mind to past lives. The Chinese government wants those shards, while the young owner of the perfume house determines to give them to the Dalai Lama who will be visiting Paris in a few days. As both the police and the Chinese mafia hunt him, he does all he can do, with the help of his sister and his friends, to try to hold on to those shards and deliver them to the one who needs them the most.
Could a fragrance really allow one to revisit past lives? Who knows? But it certainly would be cool!
