The Rope by Nevada Barr is a real thriller. For anyone who has been reading her books about law enforcement park rangers over the years, this one will be a new experience.
In The Rope, she takes us back to Anna Pigeon’s first job as a seasonal employee at the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in our own Arizona. Anna has just lost her husband in NYC and is running from her pain. She lands in a place completely foreign to her and ends up falling prey to someone who is either mentally ill or totally evil. She escapes death at least four times in the book. In the process she learns to cope with her loss and decides to become a ranger with the National Park Service.
Barr’s descriptions of the desert will resonate with those of us who live here and the suspense doesn’t let up until the last page!
